Obverse:
Head of Emperor George VI to left wearning the Imperial Crown. Legend around: rurler's name and titles (GEORGE VI KING EMPEROR), a dot below the head. Plain border.

Reverse:
The Indian tiger satanat to left in centre, at the exergue the State's name (INDIA) and below the date (1947). Around the tiger the Denomination in three languages, at left in Devanagari (Yek Rupiya = One Rupee), above in English (ONE RUPEE) and at right in Persian (Yek Rupiya = One Rupee). Plain border.


Note:
India became independent on 15th August 1947. Because British India coins dated 1947 were struck until 1950, they can be considered the first coins of Independent India. India became a Republic on 26th January 1950. Lord Mountbatten was the last Viceroy of the British Indian Empire (12 February 1947 – 15 August 1947 ) and the first Governor-General of the independent Union of India (15 August 1947– June 1948).
