Java – British occupation - East India Company (1811-1815/16). Rupee AH 1232 - AS 1744 (AD 1817), Mint: Surabaya, Silver (ø 25.5 mm – w. 12.56 g.). Edge: grained right. Scholten 597a/c (mixed dies), Bucknill 508, Mitchiner 3287, KM 247.

Obverse:
Javanese legend (Kempni Hingglis jasa hing Sura-pringga = English Company, struck in Surabaya), 5-leaved flower above, date (AS 1744) below, Z (for the mintmaster of Surabaya, Mons. J. A. Zwekkert) at bottom.

Reverse:
Malay-Arabic legend (Hinglish sikkah kompani sanah 1232 djuriba dar djazirat Djawa = Coin of the English Company, year 1232, struck in the Island of Java).

Note:
These pieces seem to have been struck by the Dutch, on account of the minute M, engraved on the Be of Zarb. In 1816, under Dutch rule (thus after August 29th, when the Dutch flag was raised at Surabaya), coins of British design were still being struck for private account, according the rapport of Van Leeuwen of May 19, 1825. They are supposedly recognizable by a very small M (presumably the initial of the native engraver Inche Maimin). (extracted from Mr. Oesho's comments on Worldofcoins' Forum).
