Herman Willem Daendels, as Governor General of the Dutch East Indies (1808-1811). Rupee 1808, Mint: Batavia (Jakarta), Silver (ø 31 mm – w. 14.00 g.). Edge: grained right. Scholten 565, Bucknill 472, Mitchiner 3182, KM 214. Rare.
Obverse: Malay-Arabic legend (Derham fi - al Kompani al - Wilandawi = Money of the Company of Hollanders).
Reverse: Malay-Arabic legend (Ila djazirat Djawa al-Kabir = For the Island of Great Java), 4 dots cross above, year 1808 below, Z (for the mintmaster of Surabaya, Mons. J. A. Zwekkert) at bottom.
Note: Herman Willem Daendels arrived in the city of Batavia (now Jakarta) on 5th January 1808, after a long voyage, and relieved the former Governor General, Albertus Wiese. Louis Napoleon was recognised in Java as King of the new Kingdom of Holland in the same year.
