Obverse: Clunies-Ross' coat-of-arms with Latin motto on scroll (PRO PATRIA = for our Country) in centre, legend (KEELENG COCOS ISLANDS, 1910*) around.
Reverse: Serial number (770) at top, Denomination (R. 1 = One Rupee) in centre, Governor's name (J. S. CLUNIES ROSS) below, date (1913) at bottom.
(*) The year when John Sidney Clunies-Ross became Governor.
Note: The Clunies-Ross family, owners of the islands from 1827 to September 1978, introduced these tokens, made from a trademark plastic substance named ivorine, in 1913 to pay the native Malay workers. It was possible to spend them only in the supply store on the island. They circulated right up until Australian coinage was introduced in 1955.
