Portuguese India – Maria II, Queen of Portugal (1834-1853). Rupia 1841, Mint: Diu, Silver (ø 22 mm – w. 8.37 g.). Edge: plain. Peres 1315-16, Gomes 25.01, Vaz. M2.70, KM 59.

Obverse:
Crowned coat-of-arms of Portugal with ornaments.

Reverse:
Cross of St. Thomas in centre between ornaments, date in its angles (1 - 8 - 4 - 1), denomination in Reis (600) above, mint name (DIO) below.

Note:
Modern forgery. New manufacture, heavier and thicker than the original, with artificial patina. The coin also bears the coat-of-arms of Maria I instead of Maria II which has a different style. The silver alloy used to make it is wrong: silver and zinc instead of silver and copper.

Metallographic analysis:
Ag 93.5 % / Zn 6.5 %
(Examination performed using an energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (EDXRF), model Fischersope XAN-FD, on the coin’s surface (ca 100 microns depth) without any mechanical preparation).
