With the exception of Herat, where he rules till his death in 1829 AD, Mahmud Shah lost most of his territories to the Barakzais in 1818, but the local dynasty of Sadozai governors, which Zaman Shah had installed at Dera Ismail Khan in 1793 AD, continued to rule and strike coins in his name. When Ranjit Singh's general Misar Diwan Chand occupied Dera Ismail Khan in AD 1821 (AH 1236) the Maharaja allowed Sher Muhammad, its hereditary Sadozai Nawab, to continue his rule under the new Sikh suzerainity (extracted from – The Coins of the Sikhs – by Hans Herrli, pp. 156-157).

Provenance:
Ex William F. Spengler Collection.
