Mint: Arcot (Calcutta), Silver (ø 26.5 mm – w. 11.62 g.). Edge: grained. Pridmore 268. KM 436. Mitchiner 1878.
Obverse: Persian couplet, Emperor name and titles (Sikka mubarak Badshah ghazi, Aziz-ud-din Muhammad, 'Alamgir = The auspicious coin of the Victorious Emperor, Chosen of the faith of Muhammad, 'Alamgir), fixed date (1172) above. Ornamental border.
Reverse: Persian legend, mint name and regnal year (Zarb Arkat sanat 6 julus maimanat manus = Struck at Arcot in the 6 year of his reign of tranquil prosperity), rose mark near the centre, privy mark (a tiny crescent) at bottom right. Ornamental border.
Note: The Madras Rupee standard coins were struck for the Decca and Chittagong districts of the Bengali Presidency at the Calcutta mint during the years 1823-1825. They are distinguished by the mark of a rose. Further mintings of the rupee half and quarter took place during the period 1830-1835. These still have the rose mark but they also bear a privy mark (a tiny crescent) of the new Calcutta mint.
